Asphalt Mix Designer Course (CTQP)
The CTQP Asphalt Mix Designer course is the most advanced FDOT asphalt training program, designed for the experienced bituminous specialist qualified to design asphalt mixtures for Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) projects in accordance with FDOT specifications and CTQP requirements.
Per the FDOT Construction Training and Qualification Manual (CTQM), the Asphalt Mix Designer qualification is for the professional with knowledge of aggregates, bituminous materials, modified binders, volumetric calculations, RAP mixes, and Florida’s Superpave specifications.
The objective of this qualification is to ensure that Superpave Mix Designs and all associated aggregate component testing are performed in accordance with Standard Test Methods, so that test results reflect the actual characteristics of the components and the mix. Uniquely among CTQP asphalt qualifications, the Asphalt Mix Designer qualification is indefinite — it never expires and does not require requalification.
Asphalt Mix Designer Course Overview
The Asphalt Mix Designer training is a three and one-half day course with a written examination on the afternoon of the fourth day. The course presents the testing required for Superpave mix design in logical sequence, including a review of the test methods covered in Asphalt Plant Level 1 training.
The course covers:
- The testing required for Superpave mix design
- Blending of aggregates and calculations of proportioning
- FDOT mix design specification criteria
- Calculation of volumetric criteria — air voids, VMA (Voids in Mineral Aggregate), and VFA (Voids Filled with Asphalt)
- Reporting of mix design data using standard report forms
There are no prerequisites for taking the course itself, and training course attendance is encouraged but not required for qualification. However, the 4-hour examination covers mix design calculations and specification criteria in depth — structured instruction and laboratory review significantly improve your chances of passing on the first attempt.
CTQP Asphalt Mix Designer Qualification Requirements
To obtain the CTQP Asphalt Mix Designer qualification, all trainees must:
- Pass the Asphalt Mix Designer written examination
- First-time qualifiers must possess an active Asphalt Plant Level 1 qualification at the time of taking the Asphalt Mix Designer qualification
- Have 90 days of experience in asphalt plant operations or asphalt mix testing
Asphalt Mix Designer Written Examination
- Open book, multiple choice
- 4 hours in duration
- Minimum passing grade of 70%
- Electronically graded by the CTQP Administrator — allow two weeks for grading and posting of results
There is no proficiency examination for this qualification — the written examination is the only exam requirement.
A Qualification That Never Expires
Once all requirements are met, the trainee’s qualification date is recorded in the CTQP training database — and here is what sets this qualification apart: per the CTQM, the Asphalt Mix Designer qualification is indefinite. It does not require requalification and remains valid unless revoked in accordance with CTQP procedures.
While Asphalt Paving Levels 1 and 2 and Asphalt Plant Levels 1 and 2 must be renewed every 60 months with re-examination fees, the Asphalt Mix Designer qualification is earned once and held for an entire career.
Who Should Take the Asphalt Mix Designer Course
- Experienced bituminous specialists responsible for designing asphalt mixtures
- Laboratory technicians and materials engineers with an active Asphalt Plant Level 1 qualification
- Quality control professionals responsible for Superpave mix submittals on FDOT projects
- Contractors and consultants developing mix designs for Florida roadway construction
- Plant Level 1 or Level 2 technicians ready to advance to the top of the FDOT asphalt career path
Why This FDOT Certification Matters
Pavement performance begins with the mix design. An improperly designed mixture — wrong volumetrics, poor aggregate blending, or incorrect binder selection — leads to premature rutting, cracking, and reduced pavement life, no matter how well it is produced and placed.
The Asphalt Mix Designer course equips professionals to design Superpave mixtures that meet FDOT specification criteria from the start, ensuring durable, high-performing pavements across Florida’s transportation network.
Career Benefits of the Asphalt Mix Designer Qualification
The CTQP Asphalt Mix Designer qualification represents the top of the FDOT asphalt career path. Mix designers are the specialists behind every Superpave mix submittal — a role that commands premium value with contractors, producers, and consultants on FDOT projects.
Combined with its indefinite validity, this qualification is a one-time investment in a credential that pays professional dividends for an entire career.
