CTQP Drilled Shaft Inspector (DSI) – Challenge Exam (Written Exam)

Earn your FDOT Drilled Shaft Inspector (DSI) qualification by challenging the written examination — the CTQM expressly allows applicants to challenge the DSI written exam without attending the two-day class. This option is for experienced field personnel ready to sit for the written examination directly.

What Is the Drilled Shaft Inspector Qualification?

The CTQP Drilled Shaft Inspector qualification, administered under Florida’s Construction Training and Qualification Program (CTQP), is required for any person involved in the inspection and acceptance process during drilled shaft operations. It confirms knowledge of the principles, practices, materials, and equipment used for drilled shaft installation.

The qualification is valid for 60 months (5 years). Near the end of that period, requalification (reapply and take the examination) is required. Note: the proficiency test is not required for applicants who are currently qualified as Drilled Shaft Inspectors at requalification.

What’s Included in the Challenge Exam

  • Written examination — open-book, multiple choice
  • Passing grade: 70%
  • Electronically graded by the CTQP Administrator and posted in the TQDBS

Qualification also requires passing a proficiency examination (passing score 100% — all items must be performed correctly, approximately 15 minutes per participant).

⚠️ Note: The CTQM allows applicants to challenge the DSI written examination without attending the class. Qualification additionally requires the proficiency exam and documented field experience (see below).

Experience Required to Qualify

To become qualified, in addition to passing the exams, the applicant must:

  • Have directly observed, inspected, and recorded the full installation of at least 5 shafts using the wet method under the supervision of a CTQP-qualified DSI
  • Submit the signed Drilled Shaft Inspector – Work Experience Affidavit to the CTQP Administrator
