Asphalt Paving Level 1 Training Course
The Asphalt Paving Level 1 Training Course is designed to prepare technicians, contractor employees, and laboratory personnel to perform essential acceptance tests used in asphalt paving projects. This training provides the fundamental knowledge and practical skills required to evaluate pavement quality and ensure compliance with industry standards.
The course consists of a one-day training program that includes both classroom instruction and examinations. Participants complete the full training and testing process in approximately 9 hours, combining theoretical learning with hands-on proficiency evaluation.
Course Structure and Duration
The Asphalt Paving Level 1 Training Course is divided into instructional sessions and examinations that are conducted on the same day.
Instruction Time – 5.5 Hours
The instructional portion of the course focuses on teaching the procedures and testing methods used in asphalt paving inspection.
-
Classroom Instruction: 5 hours
-
Proficiency Training: 0.5 hours
During the training session, participants learn the correct methods for performing pavement testing and documenting results using standard procedures.
Examination Time – 3.5 Hours
After completing the instruction portion, trainees must complete both a written examination and a proficiency examination.
-
Written Examination: 2 hours
-
Proficiency Examination: approximately 1.5 hours (depending on class size)
These examinations are designed to confirm that trainees understand the testing procedures and can apply them correctly in real-world situations.
Course Content
The Asphalt Paving Level 1 Training Course includes several important technical topics that are essential for field technicians and quality control personnel. Participants will learn:
-
Calculations required for asphalt paving testing
-
Calibration procedures for testing equipment
-
Proper documentation and reporting using standard report forms
These skills ensure that technicians can accurately measure pavement performance and report results according to accepted industry standards.
Course Attendance
Attendance at the Asphalt Paving Level 1 Training Course is encouraged to help participants fully understand the testing procedures and course materials. However, attending the training class is not required for qualification, as candidates may still take the examinations independently.
Course Prerequisites
There are no prerequisites required to enroll in the Asphalt Paving Level 1 Training Course. This makes the program accessible to entry-level technicians as well as professionals seeking to obtain the certification.
Written Examination
At the end of the course, participants must complete a written examination to evaluate their understanding of the course material.
-
Format: Open book, multiple choice
-
Duration: 2 hours
-
Passing score: 70%
The written examinations are electronically graded by the CTQP Administrator. Participants should allow up to two weeks for grading and the posting of exam results.
Proficiency Examination
In addition to the written test, participants must complete a proficiency examination that evaluates their practical skills.
The proficiency exam lasts approximately 1.5 hours and requires each trainee to demonstrate the ability to correctly perform key field measurements, including:
-
Measurement of surface tolerance
-
Measurement of cross slope
Each trainee is given two opportunities to pass each test. If a participant fails the same test twice, the entire proficiency examination is considered failed.
This exam is closed book, although trainees are allowed to review course materials after a failed attempt before performing the second attempt.
Retaking the Examination
Participants who fail either the written examination or the proficiency examination may apply to retake the test. To do so, a new application must be submitted and the appropriate examination fee must be paid before scheduling the new test.
